Dog shot by man near 31st & Sheridan bus stop; Tulsa group helps with recovery

A dog that was shot near 31st Street and Sheridan Avenue is now recovering with help from a local animal rescue organization. The incident has sparked debate online as both the dog's owner and the man who fired the shot claim they were acting in self-defense.

The dog, named King Leo, is being treated at a veterinary clinic while awaiting surgery. According to his owner, who is currently experiencing homelessness, Leo was protecting her when he was shot at a nearby bus stop.

The man who shot the dog told News On 6 he was defending himself. Tulsa police responded to the scene and confirmed an investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed.

Stepping in to assist is the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals, a nonprofit animal rescue organization. The group is covering the cost of King Leo's medical treatment, which could exceed $5,000.

“A surgery like that could be like $5,000 and up,” said Jamee Suarez, president of the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals.

Suarez, who has worked in animal rescue for over two decades, said shelters and rescue groups across Oklahoma are struggling this year more than ever with limited space, dwindling funds and a shortage of volunteers.

“It’s hard to choose those cases. And this year has probably been the hardest year for any rescue than we’ve seen,” she said.

King Leo’s story has gained traction on social media, with many praising the animal as a hero. The Oklahoma Alliance for Animals is asking for public support to cover his medical expenses.

Despite the unclear circumstances surrounding the shooting, Suarez said the organization is committed to helping animals in need.

“That doesn’t mean we’re not going to help a dog,” she said.
