A Green Country woman is warning others about Alpha-Gal Syndrome — a serious red meat allergy caused by tick bites. Tawanna Ross Leivan, along with her husband, son, and mother, all live with the condition.
A: Alpha-Gal Syndrome is a severe, potentially life-threatening red meat allergy caused by bites from the Lone Star Tick. The tick’s saliva triggers an immune response that can make people allergic to beef, pork, milk, and even everyday products like medication or clothing.
A: Green Country resident Tawanna Ross Leivan. She says Alpha-Gal has not only changed her life, but has also affected her husband, son, and mother.
Tawanna Ross Leivan:
“I did the Alpha-Gal blood test, and I was definitely positive… that was around 2019.”
A: The allergy goes far beyond food.
Tawanna Ross Leivan:
“I’ve had to change medications, feminine products, even toilet paper and undergarments — anything that contains elastic.”
A: Symptoms can appear 2 to 6 hours after eating red meat, making it hard to trace the cause.
Dr. Ed Rylander, Medical Director of the Ascension Medical Group Riverside:
“When the immune system reacts to Alpha-Gal from ticks, it also reacts to the Alpha-Gal in your McDonald’s hamburger.”
A: Many aren’t. Dr. Rylander says he never learned about Alpha-Gal in medical school and believes many people have it without knowing.
A: Reactions can range from hives and stomach pain to breathing problems and even anaphylaxis — a life-threatening emergency.
A: If you feel sick hours after eating red meat, talk to your doctor and ask about Alpha-Gal. A simple blood test can diagnose it.
Tawanna Ross Leivan:
“It’s one of those illnesses that I believe everyone should be aware of.”
A: Doctors recommend:
If red meat is making you feel sick hours after eating it, don’t ignore the signs — ask your doctor about Alpha-Gal Syndrome.
