A change to Oklahoma driver’s license fees went into effect on Sunday, ending discounted rates for drivers between the ages of 62 and 64.

Under the updated law, individuals in that age group will have to pay the full cost of a standard 4-year driver’s license, which is $38.50.

Previously, the state offered a sliding-scale discount based on age:

Previous Discount

  1. Age 62: $21.25
  2. Age 63: $17.50
  3. Age 64: $13.75

Oklahomans aged 65 and older are still eligible for a no-fee renewal. Applicants who turn 65 during the same calendar year as their license application will also qualify for the waiver.

The change stems from the Oklahoma Statutes, which included a provision for the discount’s expiration. The statute, Oklahoma Title 47 § 6-101, was later amended in February 2025, but those amendments did not alter the original expiration of the fee discount.

More information about the legislation can be found at oklegislature.gov.

PUBLIC RESPONSE

Some say they think the discounts should be based on how much money people make, not by age.

"I'm not so sure that it's the senior citizens that needs the discount as much as people that are in the lower economic strata of the country that needs the discounts,” said Dennis Kelly.

Kelly believes lawmakers should look for ways to cut costs for older people any way they can.

"I do know quite a few senior citizens that have social security as their only source of income, and if it wasn't for reduced housing cost and other things, they would be dead,” said Kelly.

TAG AGENCY RESPONSE

Tag agency employees like Sydnee Allen say they were caught off guard when they realized those customers would no longer get the discounts.

"We found out Friday, I believe my email came in at 5:03 p.m,” said Allen. “That the law was changing, and it would go into effect on Sunday."

Allen says if people want the discounts to come back, they should contact their lawmakers.

"A lot of people do think that we are state owned and state ran, and really, we're all independent contractors to Service Oklahoma,” said Allen. “We don't have really any control over it, we just follow the laws and implement them as needed here in our office."

SERVICE OKLAHOMA RESPONSE

Service Oklahoma sent News On 6 the following statement:

The discounted pricing for individuals aged 62 to 64 was sunset by the legislature previously, with the change taking effect on June 1, 2025. This update was part of a broader effort to streamline and simplify the fee structure. Individuals in this age group are now charged the standard renewal fee.
