Oklahomans will get the rare chance to fish without a license, thanks to the state’s annual Free Fishing Weekend happening June 7–8, 2025.
Typically, anyone 18 and older needs a fishing license to cast a line in state waters, but during these two days, the requirement is waived statewide. It’s all part of National Fishing and Boating Week — a time to get outside, enjoy nature, and maybe even introduce someone new to the sport.
'It’s the perfect chance to make some memories,' Oklahoma Game Wardens wrote in a social media post, adding: 'Not a trap — just a great time to fish.'
While the state license requirement is lifted, normal regulations still apply. Anglers hoping to fish for paddlefish will still need a free paddlefish permit, and some city-managed lakes may require separate permits, so double-check local rules before you go.
Officials say the weekend is a great opportunity for families to bond, especially since kids can already fish for free year-round. Forecasts show stormy weather may be moving in, which could mean active fish, but also a reminder to stay safe on the water.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol encourages all boaters to follow safety guidelines and bring required gear, especially as summer activity picks up.
Need ideas on where to go? Top spots like Keystone Lake, Grand Lake, and Fort Gibson Lake are all great for catching bass, crappie, and catfish — or even just for relaxing with a rod and reel.
🎣 Helpful Reminders:
Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just curious to try it out, Free Fishing Weekend is a great excuse to get outdoors and enjoy one of Oklahoma’s favorite pastimes.
