Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark reaffirmed his support for the 5+11 College Football Playoff format during the Big 12 Spring meetings calling it the fairest approach and the best move for the sport's future.
CFP Format
Yormark emphasized the Big 12’s strong backing of the 5+11 model, five automatic qualifiers and 11 at-large bids, over alternative systems. “It’s fair, and it rewards performance,” he said. “We want to earn a spot in the field. We don’t want any gimmies.”
That stance comes even though other proposals might guarantee more secure access for the Big 12. Still, Yormark said after discussions with the league’s athletic directors and coaches, “The 5+11 might not be ideal for the conference, but it’s good for college football.”
He revealed that the Big 12, alongside other Power 4 commissioners, has presented their preferences to the Big Ten and SEC leadership, who are driving the current playoff discussions. “There’s real momentum for 5+11,” Yormark noted, adding that public sentiment is also leaning that way.
While final decisions on CFP format changes don’t need to be reported to media partners like ESPN until December, Yormark expects progress soon. “We have time to vet concerns… but I do anticipate something getting done sooner than later.”
As for seeding preferences, Yormark confirmed that the Big 12 supports a straight 1-16 bracket—no special protections or pairings. “No different than what we just recently approved with the 12-team model,” he said.

SEC Thoughts
On the matter of potential criticism, Yormark showed no hesitation. Asked about SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey's subtle jab at a joint Big 12/ACC statement, Yormark said he took it in stride. “We all have thick skin here… We’re going to battle. That’s part of life.”
Big 12 Conference Payouts
The Big 12’s financial health also remains strong, with Yormark announcing a record $558 million will be distributed to member institutions this year. He sees "real upside" ahead in areas like sponsorship and commercial partnerships.
