The National Heat Safety Awareness Day is May 30, 2025. The National Weather Service says heat is the leading weather-related killer in the United States. The Family Initiative has useful information to prevent heat-related illnesses like dehydration, heat stroke and heat exhaustion, especially in children. Infants, children, pregnant women and the elderly are most at risk.
HOW MUCH WATER TO DRINK?
- Experts recommend drinking about 16 ounces before any activity, and 5 to 7 ounces every 15 or 20 minutes.
- Avoid alcohol, coffee, tea and caffeinated drinks.
OTHER TIPS:
- Lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing helps protect against heat.
- Pace yourself. Slow down and work at an even pace.
