With spring in full swing, now is an ideal time for gardeners to consider adding perennials to their landscape, according to Brian Jervis, a horticulturist with the Oklahoma State University Extension Office.

Unlike annuals, which must be replanted every year, perennials return season after season with proper care.

“Perennials are more the mainstay of the garden,” Jervis said. “So once you put them in the ground…they kind of just sit there. So they're not quite as exciting as annuals, but you don’t have to plant them annually.”

Shade-Loving Standouts

Finding vibrant plants that thrive in shady areas can be a challenge, but Jervis recommends starting with hostas. Known for their lush foliage and versatility, hostas come in a variety of sizes and colors. They also benefit from being divided every few years, allowing gardeners to replant or share with others.

Another popular shade perennial is astilbe, which features feathery blooms and strong leaf presence. Coral bells, or heuchera, are also a favorite for their uniquely colored leaves and tidy growth habits. One eye-catching variety mentioned by Jervis is Dolce ‘Sweet Tea,’ which offers deep bronze foliage that pairs well with greenery.

Sun-Loving Options

For sunnier spots, Jervis brought attention to canna lilies and daylilies, which bring bold colors and height to flower beds. These sun perennials tend to establish deep root systems, reducing the need for frequent watering once they're settled.

“Nurseries right now are loaded with plants,” Jervis said. “No reason not to go out and find you something.”

Tips for Success

Jervis emphasizes the importance of preparing the soil before planting perennials. Because they stay in place for many seasons, a soil test and the addition of organic matter can help ensure long-term success. He also encourages gardeners to ask questions at local nurseries or contact the OSU Extension Office for advice.

With so many varieties available and plenty of professional guidance on hand, gardeners have a wide range of choices to suit any space and enjoy for years to come.
