Officials in Muskogee County say several homes and businesses in Fort Gibson sustained significant roof damage following a line of strong storms that moved through the area on Monday.
Downed trees and power lines have created dangerous conditions, prompting street closures across several neighborhoods. Clean-up crews and local residents have been working throughout the day to clear tree debris and restore access.
One of the hardest-hit buildings in historic downtown was the old opera house, which lost its roof during the storm. The historic structure houses Granny’s Porch, a beloved antique store owned by retired schoolteacher Carol Corley for the last 25 years.
Corley said she wasn’t sure how she would begin to recover from the storm’s damage—until volunteers started showing up at her doorstep.
“I feel very blessed; I feel amazed that things are happening that I didn’t think was possible,” Corley said. “I couldn’t hardly sleep last night because all I could do was lay in bed and imagine cleaning this glass area or that area.”
Despite the shock and devastation, community members have stepped up to help.
“I drove into the heart of Ft. Gibson here, where all these homes are this morning, and just saw hundreds of people doing clean-up and cutting and dragging brush,” said Muskogee County Commissioner Ken Doke. “I’m not talking about professional crews—I’m talking about neighbors helping neighbors.”
As residents continue the clean-up effort, forecasters are warning of more storms in the coming days. Corley, who does not have insurance, said she’s unsure whether she’ll be able to cover the building in time to protect it from further damage. Members of the community are now trying to raise money to help her.
Power was out to more than 500 residents after power poles were snapped all over town. OG&E is working around the clock to replace poles and restore service.
