It wasn't necessarily a surprise that Southern Hills was awarded the 2032 PGA Championship. After all, the relationship between the club and the PGA of America has been as strong as any in the US. This will be the sixth PGA to be played at the historic Perry Maxwell layout, more than at any other venue.
Major championships have done really well in Tulsa. Big-name winners only help boost the Southern Hills resume and image in golf. Justin Thomas' second PGA title three years ago also came in a thrilling playoff with Will Zalatoris, adding to the club's legacy.
Seven years is a long time from now, but it will be here faster than you expect. Will Scheffler and McIlroy enjoy the same status in the game as they do now? So many things about the sport are in limbo, and yet it's as popular as ever.
A couple of other things- in May of 2032, Tiger Woods, the 2007 PGA champ at Southern Hills, will be 56. The course should still be as difficult as ever for players to shoot low numbers. In '07, Woods' total was 8-under. Thomas and Zalatoris finished 6-under. Low scores are at a premium.
And finally, there are a few unclaimed years in the mid-2040s on the US Open schedule, and if you're willing to dream, there's always a place for a Ryder Cup in Tulsa. Don't think the membership at Southern Hills isn't interested in either. Time will tell on those- 2032 has Tulsa's attention first.
