The City of Bartlesville is getting ready to welcome golfers back to its public course later this year. Adams Golf Course has been closed since last fall, while it gets $2 million in upgrades that were approved by voters.
Changes at the Course
Osage SkyNews 6 recently flew over the course to get a look at the changes. Some trees were removed to open up the fairways, and all 18 holes got some attention.
"We had some really old greens that were well past their service life and hard to maintain,” City of Bartlesville Director of Engineering Micah Siemers said.
The greens were reshaped, and the course was seeded a couple of weeks ago.
"So right here, these are the existing bunkers we already had in place,” he said as he showed an example of the changes. “They used to be kind of a tan sand so we went with a white court sand. And so then the greens we've got new sod around the perimeter, we went on the outside three or four feet with a different kind of, it's called astro, it's a different kind of sod that's really good."
While everyone waits for the new grass to grow, he said city crews will be busy replacing culverts and cart bridges.
"Lot of moving parts this summer. Lot of things that they need to do,” he said.
The course is set to open back up in September, just in time for the annual United Way tournament.
Regular Golfer Looks Forward to Returning
"It's gonna be different. It's gonna be beautiful. It's gonna be green,” golfer Kyle Ppool said.
Ppool has golfed here since he was a kid. He thinks the upgrades will draw visitors to Bartlesville.
"People are gonna wanna come play this course,” Ppool said. “And that's exciting, to get foot traffic into town for people to come in and do other things."
And, he looks forward to enjoying the course with his family.
"My wife picked up golf last year and so we play with some friends. And so she's starting out,” he said. “My daughter started hitting last year. I've got a 9-year-old boy that's kinda piquing his interest. And so I would be thrilled if we could just have family days and play golf out here."
New Director of Golf
At the same time the project is underway, Adams Golf Course has a new leader. Dee Roadman is the new Director of Golf. He most recently served as the Director of Golf at Battle Creek Golf Club in Broken Arrow, where he worked for more than 18 years.
Now he’s preparing to welcome both regulars and newcomers to Adams Golf Course.
"It's kinda quiet out here right now but looking forward to people coming out and seeing the changes to the golf course,” Roadman said.
The course will also have a whole new golf cart fleet. Those carts will have GPS, which Adams Golf Course has never had before.
