Fresh food funds: Cherokee Nation launches farmers market program for seniors

The Cherokee Nation is taking applications for a new program to give Tribal Seniors funds to use at area Farmers' Markets.

The Cherokee Nation is taking applications for a new program to give Tribal Seniors funds to use at area Farmers' Markets.

Who is Eligible?

The program is open to Cherokees who are 55 years old or older and live in the Cherokee Nation.

They must also meet an income requirement, which is 185% of the annual poverty income guidelines or adjunctive eligibility.

How Money Do Recipients Get?

Those that qualify will get a $100 prepaid card to be used a local farmers' markets.

When Can I Apply?

The application is now open and will still open until Sept. 1, or until the funds are fully used.

The tribe says it expects to serve five thousand elders through the program this year.
