The Oklahoma City Thunder closed out their first-round series in commanding fashion, defeating the Memphis Grizzlies and completing a 4-0 sweep to advance to the second round of the NBA Playoffs. After a grueling Game 3 comeback, the Thunder sealed the series with another strong finish Thursday night, overcoming a late push from the undermanned Grizzlies.
Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault opened his postgame comments by praising Memphis for their fight throughout the series, especially after a demoralizing Game 1 loss. “Their fight tonight was impressive, down 3-0, down Morant, down 11 with four to go," Daigneault said. "A lot of respect for them competitively."
Throughout the regular season, the Thunder largely avoided tight, clutch-time games. But Daigneault was encouraged by how his young team managed the pressure down the stretch, highlighting their defensive execution, clock management, and foul strategy in the closing minutes. “These last two games have been good for us. On a playoff stage with playoff pressure, I thought we executed really well late,” he said.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way for Oklahoma City with a 31-point performance, showing the scoring consistency that has placed him firmly in the MVP conversation. Daigneault noted that Gilgeous-Alexander didn’t change his style despite some early-series struggles, saying, "He stayed consistent with his floor game. He got into a groove these last couple games.”
The Thunder’s defense was again a major factor, forcing 22 turnovers that led to 32 points. Daigneault credited the team’s disruptive approach rather than an explicit focus on steals. “We handled the first action really well and were really disruptive tonight,” he explained. “We played really hard.”
The sweep now gives Oklahoma City valuable rest and preparation time. Daigneault emphasized the importance of using the upcoming week wisely, as they await the winner of the other Western Conference first-round matchup. "We’ll always take it," he said. "Physically it allows guys to rejuvenate, and it allows ample prep time."
Daigneault also praised Jalen Williams, known as "Dub," for his growth from last season. “He's a year older, and a year is a long time when you're in your third year. He continues to get better and was great tonight," the coach said.
With the series in hand, the Thunder now look ahead to their next challenge, confident in their development, rhythm, and resilience. As Daigneault put it, the key is staying sharp despite the layoff: “It's easier said than done, but the guys have to bring great focus and intentionality.”
Oklahoma City awaits their next opponent, poised and prepared to continue their deep playoff run.
