Heart disease claims more lives than anything else, but thousands in Tulsa took a stand. The American Heart Association hosted its annual Heart Walk downtown to focus attention on heart disease and those who’ve overcome it.
Movement and Meaning
It was a morning full of movement and meaning as hundreds hit the pavement in downtown Tulsa. Susan Brehm with the American Heart Association says the Heart Walk is a community-driven event, aimed at praising survivors and raising funds to combat heart disease.
“Our goal is to make Tulsa the heart healthiest city in Oklahoma,” she said.
Beating the Odds
Though heart disease is the number 1 cause of death in the United States, Ranae Goleman beat the odds - wearing a scar on her heart with pride. Her story began 4 years ago, when she started getting very sick. Because she was only 30, doctors never thought to look at her heart.
“A few months later, I ended up having a heart attack and an emergency triple bypass, because they told me 24 more hours, I would have been dead,” she said.
Tulsa's Beating Heart
For survivors like Goleman, the Heart Walk creates a sense of understanding. With every step taken and dollar raised, Tulsa’s heart grew stronger today - beating louder for every survivor and every life still left to save.
“It's really hard to find people that know exactly what you’re going through, and so having just everybody come together, it’s a good feeling,” said Goleman.
