Tulsa firefighters rescued a man Thursday night after he got stranded on a sandbar in the Arkansas River.

Fire crews were called around 11:30 p.m. Thursday near 49th West Avenue after residents heard someone shouting for help from the river.

Firefighters say the man had been fishing on a sandbar when he fell asleep and woke up surrounded by water.

First responders used a small raft to safely reach the man and bring him back to land.

Authorities are reminding residents to stay alert when near rivers or lakes, especially during changing weather or water conditions.
