Each year, approximately 90,000 new cases of Parkinson's disease are diagnosed in the United States, with projections suggesting that by 2030, the number of individuals living with this condition could reach 1.2 million.
Dr. Kenny Sassanto from Ascension St. John and Matthew Morton from the Oklahoma Parkinson's Alliance joined News On 6 at 4 to discuss the importance of awareness and education, especially in April, which is designated as Parkinson's Awareness Month.
Parkinson’s is primarily a degenerative disorder affecting brain function, leading to notable symptoms such as tremors, balance issues, slowness of movement, rigidity, and increased risk of falls. Although most commonly diagnosed in individuals aged 60 and older, various factors like head trauma and exposure to pesticides can also contribute to its development.
The Oklahoma Parkinson's Alliance serves as a crucial resource for patients and families navigating life with Parkinson's. They offer education, therapy, and support programs throughout the state.
