After you catch your breath from the race, it’s time to rest and refuel.

This year, the marathon has partnered with a local ice cream shop and a local brewery to create custom treats for runners at the finish line.

News 9’s Lacie Lowry got a peek behind the curtain at how these marathon-inspired refreshments were developed. Just like a marathon, these ice cream machines are running nonstop.

Marathon Magic at Boom Town Creamery

Marathon Magic is the flavor Boom Town Creamery whipped up to help promote the Run to Remember. Angela Muir, CEO and Founder of Boom Town Creamery, explained, "We had reached out to them about doing a collaborative flavor. It's part of Boomtown's mission to be connected in the community. We do these really fun collab flavors. We’ve done it with Mayor Holt and other community organizations. So when the opportunity came up to partner with the Memorial for the marathon, we said yes, absolutely."

Initially, Muir thought Boom Town would simply offer the special flavor in their store to promote the marathon, but the marathon organizers surprised her with an even bigger proposal.

“They asked for us to provide ice cream scoops for all the racers. And that’s 15,000 people, which is awesome and also very crazy for us. We are a small business,” Muir said.

15,000 scoops... in 4-ounce cups... no problem.

“It was a big task, but we were up for it,” Muir added.

Boom Town Creamery had to bring in a freezer trailer to accommodate all the marathon ice cream and dedicated one of its two ice cream machines solely to making the marathon scoops.

“For the entire month of April, for all four weeks, it’s just making marathon scoops. So all day long, four weeks, up until the 25th is the day we end making memorial scoops,” she said.

Marathon Magic is a brownie batter ice cream with candy-coated pieces like mini M&Ms. The fun, bright colors match the branding of the 25th Run To Remember—each color representing one of the six races.

“This is a huge event in the city, has been for a long time. It’s really fun to be at this anniversary year. And so... I’m really excited to be able to give all of those people finishing their race a delicious scoop of ice cream to enjoy for one of their rewards,” Muir said.

This is a limited flavor, so once the stores are sold out, it's gone. If you aren't running this weekend, Boom Town's ice cream cart will be selling Marathon Magic at Scissortail Park.

From Boom Town to Brew Town

As if the ice cream wasn’t enough, runners will also be treated to a refreshing beer at the finish line. Patrick Lively, owner of Lively Beerworks, is providing the other finish line treat for marathoners—beer!

“We were pretty excited about it, I mean, honestly it’s an honor,” said Lively.

The 25th Anniversary OKC Marathon Blonde Ale is crisp and refreshing, just like a morning run. Lively Beerworks isn’t far from the finish line, and many runners stop in after the race to enjoy a well-earned drink.

“It’s one of our best days of the year. I mean, I don’t know how many calories you burn in a marathon, but you’ve got some to give!” Lively said with a laugh.

If you can’t curl the 12-ounce at the finish line or in the tasting room, you can buy some at Homeland stores.
