What Happened Over the Weekend?

Q: How many people lost their lives?

A: Four people died after driving into floodwaters during weekend storms.

Q: Were there any rescues?

A: Yes, Moore firefighters rescued three people from vehicles. In Foyil, a woman trapped in her car was rescued by firefighters.

How Dangerous Is Floodwater?

Q: Why is it so dangerous to drive through floodwater?

A: You never know how deep or fast the water is. Even 12 inches of water can move a car, and 24 inches can sweep away an SUV or truck.

“The water that the lady drove through was probably three to four foot deep… It doesn’t take much for swift-moving water.” – Captain Jeremy Moore said.

What Do First Responders Say?

Q: What did firefighters do to save the woman in Foyil?

A: They tied off crew members with ropes and life jackets, anchored to the fire truck, and waded out to rescue her.

“We were able to wade out to her, put a life jacket on her, and get her to dry ground.” – Moore said.

Why Did the Woman Drive Into the Flooded Creek?

Q: Did the driver know the area?

A: No, she was from out of town and unfamiliar with the area, which played a role in her decision.

“She didn’t know exactly how to get to her destination… that played a part in her deciding to drive through.” – Moore said.

What Should You Do in a Flood Emergency?

Q: If you’re caught in rising water, what should you do?

A: Call 911 immediately. If you're unsure about how to avoid flooded roads, call the non-emergency number for help navigating.

What’s the Main Message from Emergency Crews?

Q: What’s the biggest takeaway from responders?

A: Don't underestimate the water. Don’t risk it.

“Every year in Rogers County, firefighters risk their lives to save people who’ve underestimated the floodwaters. Please, don’t drive through it. ‘Turn Around, Don’t Drown’ is real.” – Scotty Stokes, Rogers County Emergency Management said.

More rain is expected this week — don’t take chances with floodwaters. Heed the warnings, check your routes, and always put safety first.
