The Oklahoma State Cowboys’ quarterback competition has officially narrowed to three as redshirt freshman Maealiuaki Smith has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. The news has been confirmed by News on 6.
Smith, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound quarterback from Junipero Serra High School in Sacramento, California, appeared in four games during his true freshman season in 2024. He completed 59.5% of his passes (44-of-74) for 489 yards, two touchdowns, and four interceptions.
Coming out of high school, Smith was a three-star recruit in the 2024 class and chose Oklahoma State over offers from programs like Florida State, BYU, Miami, Missouri, and Arizona State.
Smith was thrust into action late last season after injuries and inconsistent play at the quarterback position. He made two starts, including a strong showing against Texas Tech, where he threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns in a 56-48 loss. He was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after the loss. However, he struggled in the season finale against Colorado, throwing for just 70 yards and two interceptions in a 52-0 defeat.
