There's nothing quite like finding a good book that keeps you involved cover-to-cover.
Executive Director of the Tulsa Literary Coalition Jenna Akuma brought us some choices to consider.
Magic City Books is honoring National Poetry Month with a visit from poet Steven Leyva, who will present his latest chapbook, The Opposite of Cruelty. Leyva is scheduled to appear at the store on Monday, April 21, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, with no ticket required.
Emily Henry’s new book, The Great Big Beautiful Life, will be released at midnight. The novel, which follows two writers battling to tell their version of a larger-than-life story, has received early praise from outlets such as The New York Times, USA TODAY, and Rolling Stone. Magic City Books will host a midnight release event on April 21 with limited tickets available online.
Author Will Thomas will visit Magic City Books to discuss his new release, Season of Death. The novel, set in London, immerses readers in the city’s criminal underworld. Season of Death will release on April 22. Thomas will be at Magic City Books from 7-8 p.m. on April 23.
Medicine River by Mary Annette Pember tells the true story of Native American boarding schools, including the personal experiences of the author’s mother, who was sent to one at the age of 5. Pember is scheduled to appear at the store on May 7 at 7 p.m.
Tamika Mallory, activist and co-founder of Until Freedom and the Women’s March, will speak at Magic City Books on May 9 at 7 p.m. Mallory will discuss her memoir, I Lived to Tell the Story, alongside Dr. Tiffany Crutcher, Demario Solomon-Simmons and Tulsa Mayor Monroe Nichols. The event was originally planned for February but was postponed due to weather.
The Cartoonist Club, a new graphic novel by Raina Telgemeier and Scott McCloud, is available in-store. The book follows young characters as they learn the art of comic storytelling. Akuma said that although the creators had already held a presentation at the store, copies of the book remain available for purchase.
Magic City Books will celebrate Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday with exclusive merchandise, giveaways and special offers. Shoppers who spend $50 or more can receive a free tote bag while supplies last. Full details and event registration are available at magiccitybooks.com under the "Booksmart Events" section.
