As the spike in measles cases continues to rise, the Oklahoma Poison Center is warning parents on the dangers of treating the viral infection with overuse of Vitamin A.

Why are many people bypassing the MMR Measles vaccination and taking Vitamin A?

Oklahoma Poison Center Managing Director Kristie Edelen said an article from several years ago said the measles vaccine in addition to Vitamin A helps symptoms after contracting the virus.

Results of excess use of Vitamin A

  1. Stomach upset
  2. Nausea
  3. Vomiting
  4. Dizziness
  5. Liver damage

Why is Vitamin A in excess a concern?

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin and when taken at high doses is toxic to the liver.

Edelen recommends the MMR Measles vaccine to combat the virus.

She also adds if you have any concerns about the vaccination, the Oklahoma Poison Center is staffed by pharmacists and nurses 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can phone 1-800-222-1222.
