A nonprofit childcare center in Tulsa is spreading love one birthday card at a time.
Celebrating a Special Day a Special Way
Birthdays are supposed to be one of the most special days of the year. But for some children, that day can pass by quietly - with no party, no presents and no birthday wishes. That's where Jacobs Bridge to Learning jumps in.
“What we do is we send out birthday cards and the children at JBTL childcare center, they sign the birthday cards, and we mail them out to the children everywhere,” said director Sondia Bell.
Monthly Parties
The center runs a special program with a global reach: The Birthday Club. Bell says each month, kids and their families gather for a party to sign the cards before they’re shipped out. The group also celebrates local birthdays.
A Sense of Belonging
The parties are more than just fun and games...it’s about making kids with special needs feel seen.
“A lot of times children with exceptional needs, they don’t get invited to birthday parties, because people are afraid of how they are going to react, how they're gonna accept and they should just invite them, so at JBTL, we invite everybody,” said Bell.
