An Oklahoma City metro woman is gearing up for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, just as she has for each Run to Remember since it began 25 years ago.
Kathy Moffitt says she fell in love with running over 40 years ago after taking her son to cross-country meets and even participating in athletics herself.
"Running gives me freedom," said Moffitt.
She's laced up her shoes for marathons in places like Boston, New York City, and Chicago. However, Oklahoma City's marathon is special to Kathy due to her connection to victims: Paul Ice and Valerie Koelsch.
"I always think of them," said Moffitt. "I trained for a marathon with Paul and Valerie went to school with my son."
Moffitt described how much she enjoys the entire lineup of events Oklahoma City's race weekend brings, from the Survivor Tree, to the Blessing of the Shoes to the excitement of the starting line.
"I think it brings people in from all over, then they realize what happened that day," said Moffitt.
While running isn't an option in her late eighties, Moffitt trains by walking around her retirement home as well as participating in running events across the Oklahoma City metro area.
Moffitt is participating with her friends at Spanish Cove in the senior marathon, where the group hopes to bring home the title of "Largest Senior Group" for the second year in a row.
"It's the run to remember, and that's what we do," said Moffitt.
