On Tuesday, former President Joe Biden gave his first major public speech since leaving office.

Biden gave remarks in Chicago at the national conference of Advocates, Counselors and Representatives for the Disabled.

According to the Associated Press, there were roughly 200 people in attendance.

Biden's speech focused on preserving Social Security, calling it a “sacred promise.” The former president also said President Donald Trump has “taken a hatchet” to Social Security.

However, Biden has received criticism from the current administration.

“I’m shocked that he is speaking at nighttime,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said before the speech. “I thought his bedtime was much earlier than his speech tonight.”

The Social Security Administration also reacted to the speech on its official X account, saying in part “Former President Joe Biden is lying to Americans.”

It is unclear when Biden could make another public appearance.
