A bill that could overhaul the process to add state questions to the ballot is one vote away from Gov. Kevin Stitt’s desk.

Senate Bill 1027, written by Republican Sen. David Bullard from Durant, was co-authored by Oklahoma House of Representatives Speaker Kyle Hilbert from Bristow.

If passed, the bill would change the petitioning process so that only 10% of the required signatures could come from counties with more than 400,000 residents.

Currently, the only counties with at least 400,000 residents are Oklahoma and Tulsa Counties.

All other counties can only contribute up to 4% of the required signatures.

The bill passed out of the Oklahoma House oversight committee and will now move to the full House for a vote.
