Every Saturday from April to October, Scissortail Park hosts a farmers' market for Oklahoma vendors to come and sell their goods.
The Farmer's Market at Scissortail Park finally returns this Saturday as the spring season continues, and the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch is speaking to Scissortail Park Vice President of Programming Eric Himan to learn more.
Q: What do we need to know going into this weekend?
A: The farmers market is back. It is our farmers market here at Scissortail Park. Happens from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., we have over 50 vendors, a lot of brand new vendors, and everything from produce to meat to boutique. Vendors as well [as] bread. The bread is amazing here as well. So super, super excited. Come on down. It is rain or shine, and a lot of opportunities for our vendors to meet some great new clients.
Q: Are these vendors all local Oklahoma farmers?
A: Oh yes, we really make the effort. Natasha Robinson, who is our farmers market manager, is incredible. We have a great team out here, and she makes very sure that we have great produce, fresh produce, a lot of opportunities to bring that right to downtown and provide that for people.
Q: How important is it for these farmers to sell their produce here in Oklahoma City?
A: Very important, because we even have programs like SNAP and DUO (Double Up Oklahoma), which provide assistance for those. So they have the ability to be able to buy fresh produce downtown, especially in an area we don't have a lot of grocery stores downtown. So there's a huge opportunity for them, plus, our markets run all the way from April to October. We even have our midweek market that starts May through September, so you can have a market and come to it Saturday and every Wednesday this year.
Q: What is your favorite thing to get at the farmers market?
A: My favorite thing to get at the farmers market has to be our bread. Like Watson Acres sells amazing bread, and we have some new ones, Nana's Sourdough. So the fresh bread I come down here, and usually it's gone by the time I leave.
Q: What about the wind and kite festival that was supposed to be this weekend?
A: The wind and kite festival was supposed to be this weekend. However, it's not the rain, wind and kite festival, unfortunately. So we have moved it to June 7 on another Farmers Market morning, which I think will go really well. Summertime flying kites will have plenty of them to sell and some really cool added fun kite and wind elements.
