The Oklahoma City Comets are set to take the field for their inaugural season, marking a significant rebranding effort for the city's Triple-A baseball team. The decision to transition from the Oklahoma City Dodgers to the Comets was the result of years of planning and research, according to general manager and president Michael Byrnes.
"What a process it's been," Byrnes said. "The LA Dodgers were part owners of the franchise here locally, so in late 2014, for the 2015 season, we rebranded to the Oklahoma City Dodgers. Then there was a change of ownership in late 2021... it opened the door for us to reconsider what is our identity."
The name Comets pays homage to Oklahoma baseball legend Mickey Mantle, who was known as the "Commerce Comet." The rebrand also incorporates elements of Oklahoma City's aerospace industry while maintaining a connection to the Dodgers, who the team remains affiliated through 2030.
"Some of the themes that came out during the rebranding process were the city’s connection to professional sports and a desire for a name that had a sense of professionalism," Byrnes said. "We also wanted to maintain a strong link to the Dodgers while creating something unique to Oklahoma City."
In addition to the new name and branding, the Comets have introduced changes to the fan experience, including a revamped menu. One of the new ballpark staples will be the Comet Dog, which has received strong early reviews.
The rebrand also comes as the team's home, Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, enters its 27th year. Originally completed as the first MAPS project, the stadium has become a centerpiece of downtown Oklahoma City’s revitalization.
"I've learned just how much pride there is for the ballpark itself," Byrnes said. "Because ... it was that first MAPS project, it helped bring legitimacy to the MAPS program.
The Comets plan to host a variety of events beyond baseball games, including craft beer festivals, nonprofit walks, and educational programs.
The Oklahoma City Comets will make their official debut on April 1.
