The Outsiders musical, based on S.E. Hinton’s iconic Tulsa novel, is up for a Grammy Award tonight for Best Musical Theater Album. The Broadway production has already won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, cementing its place as a major theatrical success.
The musical, currently running at Broadway’s Jacobs Theatre, brings the classic coming-of-age story to life through music. It follows Ponyboy Curtis and the rivalry between the Greasers and the Socs in 1960s Tulsa, a setting that is heavily referenced throughout the show.
Danny Boy O’Connor, executive director of The Outsiders House Museum in Tulsa, expressed his excitement for the nomination.
"Whether they win or lose, they've already won because this thing is still going. It's already won the hearts and minds of the newer fans and of us old fans. This is just icing on the top, so hopefully they bring home the trophy," O’Connor said.
The Outsiders musical has resonated with audiences, bringing Tulsa’s story into the spotlight. Songs like Tulsa, 67, Justice for Tulsa, and Far Away From Tulsa directly reference the city, further solidifying its deep ties to the production.
Fans and supporters in Tulsa have already celebrated the musical’s success, hosting watch parties when the show took home its Tony Awards earlier this year.
Now, all eyes are on the Grammy Awards, where the production could add another major accolade to its growing list of honors.
The Grammy Awards air tonight at 7 p.m. on CBS, where fans will find out if The Outsiders musical takes home yet another prestigious award.
