Girl Scout Cookie season is officially underway, with thousands of boxes being distributed across the country—including right here in the metro.
At a warehouse in Oklahoma City, more than 400,000 boxes of cookies are ready for delivery. On distribution day alone, at least 150,000 boxes will be sent out, according to the Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma.
“Today is one of the biggest days in Girl Scouts,” said interim council CEO Kat Marran. “It’s a well-oiled machine.”
But beyond the excitement of Thin Mints and Samoas, Girl Scout Cookie sales are about more than just sweet treats. The program teaches young girls key skills such as organization, planning, and money management.
“This is about a program more than it is about the cookie,” Marran said. "It could teach girls about organization, about planning, about money management."
Each Girl Scout develops their own sales strategy, from asking classmates to tapping into their parents’ network of coworkers, friends, and family. Many set ambitious goals, like selling 300 boxes or more.
The funds raised go directly back to the troops, allowing the girls to decide how to use their earnings for activities, trips, and community projects.
“It’s a girl-led program. They get to decide what they want to do with their time and their treasure,” Marran said.
More than anything, Girl Scouts say the experience helps build courage, confidence, and character—lessons that last far beyond cookie season.
