A man was taken to the hospital in critical condition after he crashed his car into a North Oklahoma City home on Tuesday afternoon, Oklahoma City Police told News 9.
The incident happened heading northbound on the Broadway Extension near Hefner.
Debra Lewis was at work when she received a call from an Oklahoma City police officer.
“He told me I might need to get to the house because there's a car inside my house and I just had to come home and see what the damage is,” Lewis shared.
Lewis explained that she was supposed to have the day off but went to work instead.
“I wound up going to work. So, that was a blessing for me to get to work this morning. I thank God for that one right there, ‘cause I was off today.”
If she had been home, Lewis said she believes she would have been in the part of the house that was destroyed.
"If my grandkids, or me and my daughter would have been here, we would have been hurt,” Lewis realized. “I can replace things, but I can't replace my family or me.”
Neighbors told News 9 that this is not the first time a vehicle has crashed in the area.
“Luckily, nobody's got killed out here. And then this here,” said neighbor Orville Hazley Jr. referencing Tuesday’s crash. “I was in the house and I heard the whole thing.”
He said it sounded like an explosion.
“And it's dangerous, as you can see right there where the brick is new,” Lewis said pointing to the repaired fence. “They just fixed that from a car hitting it not too long ago. We won't even put the Broadway Parks sign back up there because they afraid they gonna come back and knock it back down again.”
Police said the driver was not wearing a seat belt and may have experienced a medical episode behind the wheel.
The investigation is ongoing.
