As frigid conditions settle in across Oklahoma, one issue doctors are seeing in increased numbers is cold-related injuries.

Staying outside in the cold can lead to several afflictions, including hypothermia. However, doing so without proper clothing can also result in frostbite, which can cause pain, blisters, and even the loss of appendages.

What can I watch for when it comes to frostbite?

Dr. Clayton Nelson with SSM Health in Oklahoma City says warning signs of frostbite to look out for include discoloration, numbness, and pain.

These symptoms can start due to the wind-chill factor, freezing temps, or if you're wearing damp or torn clothes.

"It's multifactorial, lots of things can put a person at more risk for frostbite or hypothermia," Nelson said. "Most importantly is just preventing it in the first place by limiting your exposure and keeping things as dry as possible."

What can I do if I notice any frostbite symptoms?

If you experience signs of frostbite or hypothermia, try to find somewhere warm and seek medical help immediately.

If you require a place to warm up from harsh temperatures, we have a list of warming shelters on the News 9 website.
