According to the Oklahoma Red Cross, its response teams have deployed to 80 home fires across the state in the first two weeks of the year. The organization is offering tips for Oklahomans to stay warm during the upcoming arctic temperatures while staying safe.
A: The Oklahoma Red Cross helps people who have experienced a disaster through volunteer teams.
"They'll provide emotional support, recovery support," said Matt Trotter, a spokesperson for the Oklahoma Red Cross. "Sometimes financial assistance is available, and we just want to make sure that when people are in a situation like that, that we're there to help them understand what comes next. Recovery can be a long process."
A: The Red Cross recommends keeping anything that can catch fire at least three feet away from any source of heat, especially electrical sources such as space heaters, outlets, or power strips. And, non-electrical sources such as stoves or fireplaces. They also advise not leaving any heat-producing equipment unattended, and not leaving items such as space heaters on overnight.
A: Immediately call 911. The Red Cross recommends practicing fire drills in order to be prepared to leave a house quickly during a fire. Families experiencing a disaster can request help by calling 1 800 RED CROSS.
