About 100 Oklahoma National Guard Soldiers and Airmen will deploy to Washington, D.C., to support the 60th Presidential Inauguration, according to a press release from the Oklahoma National Guard.

They will join nearly 8,000 National Guard members from around 40 states and territories to assist the District of Columbia National Guard, the release stated.

Maj. Gen. Thomas H. Mancino, adjutant general for Oklahoma, said in the release that the National Guard routinely supports the capital region during inaugurations.

The National Guard's involvement in presidential inaugurations dates back to April 30, 1789, when local militias escorted George Washington to his inauguration in New York City, the release noted.

The Oklahoma Guardsmen are scheduled to be on mission for about seven to ten days, according to the release.
