A fire on Jan. 7 has left a Sulphur family without a member of its family, and their home.

Shawn and Mary Lloyd made it out of the home with their 12-year-old son, but Shawn's mother, Nancy, didn't make it outside.

"Shawn said he woke up and there was a smell of something burning," said family friend Charlie Robertson, who is fundraising for the family. "He went down the hallway to investigate. And the fire had moved from the laundry room where it apparently started, into the living room. And he quickly went back and got his wife and got his small son and got them outside."

The family, who survived an EF-3 tornado that struck the town less than half a mile from their home in April, is now left with nothing.

"When my wife and I first moved here, we found signs that pointed us to the local square dance club," Robertson said. "We went down to visit, and Shawn and his wife, Mary, were the absolute first people to walk up and introduce themselves and say hi."

Robertson said several people have already donated clothes to the family, and items for their son.

"They're truly quality people," he said. "And, you know, sadly, this tragedy has fallen upon them. And they need help. They lost literally everything."

Robertson, and other community members, have raised nearly $5,000 for the Lloyd family through GoFundMe.
