Avoid Becoming A Victim: Lori Fulbright's Black Friday Shopping Safety Tips

As shoppers gear up for the busiest shopping day of the year, News on 6's Lori Fulbright is sharing crucial safety tips to keep your belongings secure.

Never Leave Your Purse in the Car

Lori says that you should "never, ever, ever, ever" leave your purse in the car, even for a moment. She said that Tulsa alone averages about 500 car break-ins per month, and thieves are quick to target purses left behind.

"People think it's going to be safe for just a few minutes. I'll hide it under the seat. Don't do that," Fulbright warns. "And then you get to the mall or the store, and you put it in the trunk. They watch that. They break your window, flip your trunk, release and take it once you're in the store."

Avoid Putting Purses in Shopping Carts

Lori says she advises against placing your purse in the shopping cart, as it can be easily stolen when you're distracted. "Never, ever, ever put it in your cart, because you get distracted. And you're going to look around and people go, 'Oh, well, I belted in, or safety belt it, or I'll have my hand on it.' They're going to take whatever they want the minute you turn your back."

Make Copies of Your Cards

To prepare for the worst-case scenario, Lori recommends making copies of the front and back of all the cards in your purse before going shopping. "That way, if it does get stolen, you have all those 800 numbers to call and cancel all those cards."

Secure Your Purchases

Lori advises against leaving your purchases in the car for several hours while you continue shopping. "It's better if you can say, 'Hey honey, come by and get our packages and take them home,' and then keep shopping. Because the more you pile in there, the more they can get stolen."

Maintain Home Security

Lori also emphasizes the importance of home security during the holiday season. She suggests keeping your home blinds in the same position (up or down) as when you left, and ensuring adequate lighting around your home, as many break-ins occur during the day.

"Lots of lighting is always a good thing, but a lot of these break-ins happen at your homes Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. so just be safe out there," Lori warns.
