The Lindsey House in Tulsa provides a place to live for women and children who are homeless. Families receive an apartment and go through a program to find a job and permanent housing.

Now, the organization is asking for help through the Holiday Heroes Project.

When life presented challenges, Latoya Gaines always relied on herself.

"I have always been a full-blown hustler," she said.

But even as she worked tirelessly to provide for her three kids, bills and payments kept piling up to a point where the reality became undeniable—they were homeless.

"I felt worthless," said Gaines. "I thought hard work would pay off, but it didn’t. It left me with nothing but the vehicle I was driving."

And even though she likes to rely on herself, she knew she needed to ask for help.

She found it at the Lindsey House, which provided much more than a roof over their heads—it offered a new beginning.

"I have always been stuck in survival mode. So being able to just kind of relax and flow, that’s how it’s been for me," she said.

Now, she hopes people will help the Lindsey House by providing support to families like hers during the holiday season.

Each family fills out a wish list. Gaines says it made all the difference last Christmas.

"It took a lot of weight off my shoulders," she said. "It was one less thing that I had to worry about. It’s like a sense of peace."

Peace she only found when she asked for help.

"It’s no way to put that into words. It’s just grateful."
