One pill a day can greatly reduce your risk of HIV infection.
This pill is a medication called Truvada® used for PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis. When you take PrEP as prescribed, it reduces your risk of getting HIV from sexual activity by more than 90%. PrEP also reduces the risk of contracting HIV by injecting drugs using contaminated needles by more than 70%.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that PREP be taken by those who are not in a mutually monogamous relationship. Rates for HIV exposure in gay or bisexual men or heterosexual men and women who do not know their partner’s HIV status.
