The Sooners looked strong in their football season opener against the Illinois State Redbirds, taking the 35-3 win in the first home turf game of the season.

Sooner Nation showed up in Norman on Saturday, and Sports Director Toby Rowland breaks the whole thing down with Sports Reporter Chris Williams in an in-depth conversation on the biggest moments and standout players.

Watch the full conversation below, or follow along for the biggest takeaways:

OU Offensive Performance

  1. Oklahoma’s offense started slowly, going three-and-out on the first two possessions, but found its rhythm quickly after that, with nine different players catching passes.
  2. Quarterback John Mateer was highlighted for his standout performance: 30 of 37 passing, over 80% completion rate, and a new school record for passing yards in a season opener, surpassing Baker Mayfield’s previous mark.
  3. Mateer’s chemistry with offensive coordinator Arbuckle was noted as “in sync” and resembling a coach-player partnership on the field.
  4. Wide receiver Lewis caught 9 passes for 119 yards, the most by any Oklahoma receiver in a game since last season.

Concerns About the Running Game

  1. The running game was ineffective; Oklahoma failed to consistently move Illinois State’s defensive line and struggled in short-yardage situations.
  2. Injuries along the offensive line impacted performance, but the lack of push is a carryover concern from last year.
  3. The coaches believe the team's offensive approach adapts to what defenses give, thus passing was emphasized when runs were stuffed

OU Defensive Performance

  1. The defense dominated against the run and pass, limiting Illinois State throughout the game and knocking out their starting quarterback.
  2. The depth was apparent as multiple sets of defensive backs and linebackers rotated without a drop-off in performance.
  3. Defending against Michigan's run-heavy offense will be the key storyline next week; the depth and strength of Oklahoma’s defensive front will be tested.

Special Teams Notes

  1. Kicker Tate Sandell converted all extra points; no field goals attempted.
  2. Punt returner Isaiah Sategna showed promise and nearly broke a long return (called back due to a penalty), with expectations for impact plays from him this season.

OU vs. Michigan Matchup

  1. The coming Michigan game in Norman is highly anticipated, with storylines focused on whether Oklahoma’s defensive front can stop Michigan’s powerful running game.
  2. Michigan’s strategy will likely be to establish the run rather than rely on young quarterback Bryce Underwood to decipher Oklahoma’s complex defense.
  3. Both sides are excited about the classic matchup: Oklahoma’s high-flying pass attack led by Mateer versus Michigan’s physical, run-first identity.
