Mateer’s Sooner Debut

Considered the #1 transfer portal pickup in the country by ESPN, the preseason love for John Mateer has been significant both in Sooner Land and across the SEC. The comparisons to Baker Mayfield in stature and style of play are unmistakable. Now we find out if he can compare to the Heisman Trophy winner on the field.

New “Buck” Calling Plays

Oklahoma’s offense was abysmal a year ago. The Sooners ranked 97th in the nation in scoring, 113th in total offense, and 119th in passing yardage. Enter Ben Arbuckle. Mateer’s Offensive Coordinator at Washington State, Arbuckle, is only 29 years old, but is considered one of the bright up-and-coming offensive minds in college football. OU fans hope today he begins to turn the Sooner Offense around.

Running Back Rotation

The Sooners' other biggest transfer portal pickup was running back Jadyn Ott, who tore up the PAC-12 two seasons ago at Cal. But, the depth chart listed Ott as third string going into the opener behind Jovantae Barnes and freshman Tory Blaylock. According to reports, Barnes and Blaylock have been fantastic in fall camp. When the lights come on, who will be DeMarco Murray’s go-to back tonight and this season?

BV Back Running The “D”

Zac Alley departed for West Virginia following the Sooners' Armed Forces Bowl loss to Navy last season. Rather than hire another Defensive Coordinator, Brent Venables named himself to the job. One of the most successful DCs in college football over the last 25 years, Venables is more than qualified for the job. How will he balance the added duties to his Head Coach role?

Is Daniels a Difference Maker?

OU stole linebacker Kendall Daniels from their Bedlam rivals in the offseason out of the transfer portal. Likely to fill the “Cheetah” position, Daniels has been one of the stars of fall camp. At 6’5, his length could be a perfect fit. Tonight offers a first glimpse at how big a difference maker he could be.
