What is Ragweed?

Ragweed is a common weed in the United States, more concentrated in the Midwestern and eastern states. Up to a billion pollen grains can be produced from a single plant. A ragweed plant only lasts one season, but because it produces so many grains and grains travel hundreds of miles, it irritates a lot of allergy sufferers. 

When is Ragweed Season?

Ragweed starts to increase by mid to late August in eastern Oklahoma. The peak of pollen usually occurs in the first several weeks of September, but pollen numbers can remain elevated through October.

How Does the Weather Impact Ragweed?

On warm and breezy days, ragweed pollen can spike during the day between 10 a.m. & 4 p.m. If we get rain, it can wash the pollen out or settle it down. Once we dry out, pollen numbers spike again.

1. Dry & windy conditions: pollen spreads easily – worst days for allergies
2. Cooler nights: help plants release more pollen in the mornings
3. Rain: settles pollen temporarily, but once it dries out, it can help plants produce more.

Tips to Help Your Allergy Symptoms

1. Keep windows and doors closed – especially on warm & windy days.
2. Shower and change clothes after you’ve been outside.
3. Use HEPA filters for your home.
4. Limit outdoor activity on high pollen days.
5. Talk to your doctor about medication to help relieve symptoms.
