First responders and people living in Vinita are honoring the life of Zac Rinehart, the Turnpike Authority employee who was killed while working on the Will Rogers Turnpike. Rinehart was also a volunteer Vinita firefighter.
Firefighters from surrounding departments took part in a procession as Rinehart's body was transported from Chelsea to a funeral home in Vinita.
People lined the sidewalks with American flags and signs to honor Rinehart.
"For him to volunteer his time to keep us safe, that was wonderful," said Nancy Keene. "We're doing this out of respect and sorrow."
Some knew Rinehart well, and others never got to meet him in person. No matter the familiarity, they say it was important to show up.
"It was amazing, brought tears to my eyes," said Nicolette Martin. "We're a small community and we're glad that everybody stepped out to support."
Firefighters from all around the area took part in the procession.
"We see bad things all the time, but whenever it's one of your own, it hits a little harder," said Kevin Huxtable, chief of Vinita Fire.
Huxtable said the last couple of days have been hard on everyone who knew Rinehart. The outpouring of support from the community and fellow firefighters is a bright spot on a dark week.
"It lets you know that there's still good in the world," said Huxtable. "It was great for the family to see the support and love for Zac."
Some Oklahoma Turnpike Authority employees also took part in the procession. Donations can be made to an online fundraiser supporting Rinehart's family here.
