A local senior citizen performance troupe is turning poems, songs and stories into lively performances across the community.
The Main Street Players is a readers’ theatre group for adults aged 60 and older. Members perform skits, transform songs and poems into theatrical pieces, and even create original scripts.
The group averages 10 to 15 members, though participation can vary as members balance busy lives.
The troupe launched in February 2022 when founder Marla Taylor offered a class at the Broken Arrow Senior Center called Theatre from Front to Back.
The class gave participants a behind-the-scenes look at theatre, including auditions and a script read-through. Several attendees enjoyed the experience so much that they asked Taylor to start a full performance group.
The Main Street Players typically perform at least once a week at senior living communities, churches, the Senior Center, and local organizations.
They recently performed for the "Seniors Go" group, which has already invited them back for another show.
Taylor says the best part of performing is the fellowship and enjoyment. Members do not need to memorize lines but must understand their scripts, how to deliver them, and where to stand during readings.
All Main Street Players performances are free, but Taylor says donations to the Broken Arrow Community Playhouse are welcome to help cover printing costs.
The Main Street Players maintain a presence on Facebook at Main Street Players BACP. The Broken Arrow Community Playhouse can be found on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
