Betty Casey, editor of Tulsa Kids magazine, joined News On 6 to share a checklist of essential tips to help kids and parents ease into the school year. From sleep schedules to meeting teachers, here's how you can make the transition smoother for everyone.
One of the first things parents should focus on is getting kids back into a consistent sleep routine.
“Sleep is good, especially for the little guys. They need to sort of get back into that routine,” Casey said.
Parents can gradually adjust their children’s bedtime by 15 to 30 minutes earlier each night leading up to the school year. This will help kids adapt to the earlier wake-up times needed for school, avoiding a last-minute rush on the first day.
For students who are transitioning to a new school or a new grade, Casey recommends taking advantage of meet-the-teacher events.
“Imagine, especially if you have a kid that might be a little anxious, if you can go meet the teacher. If you can walk around the school, the more opportunities you have to see that school,” she said.
This is helpful for younger children or middle schoolers who may be nervous about things like finding their locker or navigating the lunchroom. Familiarizing them with the school environment can ease anxieties and help both parents and kids feel more confident.
If your child is riding the bus, it’s important to review the route and pick-up times ahead of time.
Casey also suggests visiting the school’s website or Facebook page to check for important updates on school rules and dress codes.
For parents looking for more tips on making the back-to-school transition as smooth as possible, Tulsa Kids is hosting a special event on Thursday, August 28th, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Tandy YMCA.
The event, called “Smooth Transitions: Tools for a Stress-Free School Year,” will feature presentations by Lorri Perez from Family and Children Services and Suzanne Lair, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services at Jenks Public Schools.
This event is designed for parents of children of all ages, and limited childcare is available. Parents can learn more and register by visiting the Tulsa Kids website at tulsakids.com.
