As the start of the school year approaches across Oklahoma, a Tulsa education expert is offering advice to help students and families prepare. From campus visits to financial aid, Dr. Laura Latta with the Tulsa Higher Education Consortium says the right planning now can lead to a successful semester later.

Tulsa students encouraged to plan ahead for a strong fall start

Dr. Latta says it may be hard to believe, but the fall semester is right around the corner.

“It is crazy how fast the summer went,” she said. “And a little bit hard to believe that we are starting the fall semester just next month.”

Her top advice for families preparing for college, whether it's a recent high school graduate or an adult learner returning to school, is to visit campus before the semester starts. That includes meeting with an advisor, getting familiar with the campus, and finalizing a course schedule.

“Really, meeting with the advisor is going to be such a beneficial first step in starting the semester,” she said.

High school students should meet with counselors early

Dr. Latta also recommends that high school juniors and seniors check in with their school counselors now to make sure they’re on track for graduation.

“Making a plan for what classes they need to take in high school so that they graduate and have all of the credits that they need to then go on to whatever college they'd like to attend,” she explained.

Having the right guidance early is crucial. News On 6's Erin Conrad noted how a single misstep freshman year added an extra semester to her college journey, and extra tuition costs.

Financial aid starts with FAFSA, local scholarships available

When it comes to paying for school, Dr. Latta says students should start by applying for the FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

“That’s sort of the gateway to accessing financial aid,” she said.

She also urges students to meet with financial aid offices during campus visits. With nine colleges and universities in the Tulsa Higher Education Consortium, she says there are plenty of resources available for local students, including scholarships and work-study programs.

“We have incredible advisors and financial aid advisors to help guide students,” Latta said, adding that their website—tulsahighered.com—includes a list of vetted scholarships specifically for students in the region.

“There are a lot of different resources that students can access to pay for college,” she said.

Tulsa families reminded: “It’s almost here”

With the countdown to class underway, Dr. Latta says now is the time for students and parents to take action. Whether it’s meeting an advisor, applying for aid, or visiting campus, every step counts.
