On Tuesday, Scottie Scheffler went where few professional athletes choose to go in news conferences. The world's number one ranked golfer had answered the usual questions about what he thinks of Royal Portrush, the site of this week's Open Championship in Northern Ireland, the state of his game and how much he likes true links golf.
Just before wrapping up the media session, Scheffler opened up about his priorities. He loves golf, loves competing, but said, "This is not a fulfilling life. It's fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment, but it's not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart."
It's not the first time he has talked about the sense of importance the sport has in his life versus the love for his wife and son. His competitive fire to win is strong, but it's not everything.
"Why do I want to win the Open Championship so badly? I don't know because, if I win, it's going to be awesome for two minutes," Scheffler said. "I love putting in the work, I love getting to practice, I love getting to live out my dreams. But at the end of the day, sometimes I just don't understand the point."
Scheffler is the favorite to take home the Claret Jug on Sunday. A victory would give him three of the four major titles needed for the career grand slam. But win or lose, Scheffler said, "The show goes on."
