The sweet smell of smoked meat and the sound of live music will fill the air this Labor Day as the Step Up Now Foundation hosts its 6th Annual “Step Up to the Grill on Greenwood” BBQ Fest.

Set for Monday, Sept. 1, the free event will transform the Historic Greenwood District into a celebration of community, culture and cause, with a side of competition.

Sizzling food, soulful sounds and family fun

Attendees can expect mouthwatering barbecue, entertainment and a strong sense of community spirit.

The festival is free to attend and features live music, local vendors and family-friendly fun. Food vendors will be on-site, selling everything from ribs and brisket to homemade sides.

More than a meal: A mission for change

This isn't just about good food — it's about giving back.

The Step Up Now Foundation, a Tulsa-based nonprofit founded in 2023, uses the BBQ fest to raise funds for key initiatives supporting youth, entrepreneurs and families facing hardship. Programs include:

  1. Entrepreneurial Development: Helping local small businesses with mentorship and resources.
  2. Adolescent Mental Wellness: Supporting emotional well-being for teens.
  3. Driven to Win: A life skills initiative for youth empowerment.
  4. Turning Pages: Promoting literacy through fun, rewarding activities.

All proceeds will help individuals facing financial or medical challenges while fueling long-term community empowerment.

Grill masters wanted: Competition heats up

Backyard pitmasters and seasoned pros are invited to enter the festival’s grilling competition.

The entry fee is $150, and registration must be completed by Aug. 18. Competitors will be judged on appearance, taste and tenderness — but sauce cannot be applied until after the meat is cooked.

Winners will compete for the People’s Choice Award, and competitors are also allowed to sell food at the event. The vendor fee is waived for grillers in the competition.

Registration for the competition can be found here.

Note: No gas or pellet grills are allowed. All cooking must be done onsite.
