With the 100th anniversary of Route 66 fast approaching in 2026, Oklahoma communities are being called on to help refresh their stretch of the historic highway.

Getting Ready for a Global Spotlight

Route 66 spans more miles in Oklahoma than in any other state, and tourism officials say the upcoming centennial will draw in visitors from around the world. That’s why groups like the Oklahoma Route 66 Association are encouraging cities, towns, and local organizations to get involved now.

“People from all over the world are going to be coming to Oklahoma on Route 66,” said Rhys Martin, president of the Oklahoma Route 66 Association. “It’s an opportunity to put our best foot forward and make sure these communities are ready.”

Grants Now Available for Local Projects

Through the new Keep Route 66 Beautiful initiative, communities within 25 miles of the highway can apply for grant funding to help improve their surroundings. That includes efforts like:

  1. Painting and mural restoration
  2. Tree and flower planting
  3. Litter pickup and landscaping upgrades
  4. Creating butterfly gardens

These projects aim to enhance the visual experience for travelers and locals alike.

Who Can Apply?

The grants aren’t limited to cities and municipalities. Smaller groups are welcome too.

“You don’t have to be a town to apply,” Martin said. “Even if you’re just a small local organization that wants your community to look a little better, you can apply for a grant and get out and plant trees or do whatever you want to do.”

Key Dates and How to Get Involved

Grant applications opened July 1 and will be accepted on a rolling basis through December 2026, giving communities time to plan and implement their projects ahead of the centennial.

What’s Next

The Oklahoma Route 66 Association says the beautification campaign is a win-win: improving local communities and preparing them for the economic boost that could come from increased tourism in 2026.
