Block 34 will be a community space in Stillwater that includes an amphitheater, a park, a kids play area, picnic spaces, a beer garden and more. The two main spaces will be the Kicker Sound Stage and Simmons Pavilion.
"It's another space for us to have that really adds to that quality of life," said Deputy City Manager Christy Driskel. "We’re going to have, starting summer through fall, a live concert series, we’re going to have shop the block market Saturday mornings, food trucks. There's going to be something for everyone."
After a few setbacks, like water damaging parts of the roof of the pavilion, and the difficulty of construction during a rainy month, crews are still on track to finish ahead of the first scheduled event on July 25. The Dancing Turtle Arts Festival will kick off the use of Block 34.
Stonecloud Brewing Co. is just down the street from Block 34, and General Manager Matt Simmons says it's more than just a gathering space; it's representative of the continuing evolution of Stillwater and proof that the community has value beyond Oklahoma State University.
This space is meant to be used beyond the city's planned events. The lawn on the Block itself is about an acre in size, and the city hopes people will enjoy lunch at the picnic tables and bring their kids to the splash pad and music area.
"It’s going to be a usable space that we are inviting people to not only how we use it, but show us how you want to use it," said Driskel.
People will be able to book events like weddings and other celebrations at Block 34 through the city.
The local company, Kicker, which makes subwoofers, speakers, and amplifiers, and Simmons Bank donated the funds to build the space. The two businesses also have an agreement with the city to help with upkeep for the next ten years.
