Guthrie police released the 911 calls and body camera footage from a tense scene Saturday night. Police say a man shot his wife five times in broad daylight and she survived. All Guthrie police officers receive active shooter training, and while this technically wasn’t an active shooter situation, police say the response is the same and credited for saving this mother’s life.

“My neighbor is shooting at his wife and beating …. her,” you can hear the caller tell the 911 operator on Saturday.

This was among the calls that came in on Saturday around 7 p.m. from neighbors witnessing the worst.

“Had his wife's hair in his hands and was hitting her with his fists,” said Sgt. Anthony Gibbs, describing what witnesses saw outside the home on Elm Street.

“I'm at the corner of Elm and Springer, and I just heard like five gunshots, and I heard people screaming,” another 911 caller said.

When police arrived, Sgt. Gibbs said they confirmed what witnesses saw, that 56-year-old Larry Don Chandler shot his wife five times in the lower torso, outside of their home. Valerie Patton wasn’t surprised.

“They said the shooting was on Elm and I knew exactly who it was,” Patton said.

She said the couple argues frequently.

“He's threatened to do it so many times,” Patton said. “Telling her he's gonna kill her, shoot her, beat the hell out of her, it didn't matter; he's brutal.”

Sgt. Gibbs says four officers responded to the scene and found the victim.

“Getting her out quickly was paramount important,” he said.

The officers' training kicked in, using a patrol car to shield the woman from her husband, who was still armed with a pistol across the street.

“Being in that homicidal, suicidal mindset, you don't know what that person is going to do,” Sgt. Gibbs said.

Knowing they couldn’t wait, officers and a bystander worked to put the victim into a patrol car to transport her to a nearby ambulance.

“We've now begun to carry whole blood on the ambulances in the area, which is another lifesaving strategy in itself,” he said.

After a 45-minute standoff with police, Chandler surrendered and was taken into custody. He was booked into the Logan County Jail Saturday night on complaints of shooting with intent to kill and domestic assault and battery resulting in great bodily harm.

Police say two children were inside the home at the time of the shooting but not harmed.
