The City of Norman has implemented a Knox Electronic Lockbox system to improve fire response efficiency, allowing firefighters to access buildings quickly, and without causing damage.
New commercial buildings in Norman must install a secure, tamper-proof lockbox that holds keys, which is only accessible by Norman Fire Department responders through the use of an electronic key system. Each electronic key is password-protected, tracked, and automatically disabled if lost or stolen.
Norman residents have begun to adopt the usage of the Knox Box system for their own homes. David Miller first learned about the Knox Box when it became mandatory for new commercial buildings, and was so impressed that he installed one at his home.
"I thought this would be a really good thing to do," Miller said. "This would be a lot cheaper than replacing a door."
The system is particularly useful for elderly or independent residents who may have mobility issues.
"Norman's got a lot of older citizens, and a lot who are living on their own," Miller said. "It just seemed to make sense to me."
Interested homeowners and business owners may purchase one of these boxes through Knox Box's official website. When a Knox Lockbox is purchased, the company notifies the Norman Fire Department, who will program the lockbox and secure the owner's keys inside.
The lock box is then secured, ensuring that only the Norman Fire Department can use it to access keys in emergency situations.
