New social studies standards heading to the state legislature now call for students to investigate the 2020 election results.
The Oklahoma State Department of Education’s draft standards, posted in December, initially directed high school U.S. history students to examine issues related to the 2020 election. However, a newly obtained version—published by online media outlet NonDoc—now instructs students to “identify discrepancies in 2020 election results.”
Oklahoma House Minority Leader Cyndi Munson said her caucus plans to raise concerns when lawmakers meet to approve the updated standards.
“It’s appalling that they keep talking about this when there’s been proof and facts over and over again that there were no discrepancies. Joe Biden was the president of the United States,” Munson, (D-Oklahoma City), said.
State Superintendent Ryan Walters defended the changes, telling News 9 that the standards are meant to encourage students to critically examine details of elections, including the 2020 race.
The proposed standards must now be reviewed by the legislature before they can be implemented in Oklahoma classrooms.
